Teebs

Teebs is a beat maker from California who has put out some work on Brainfeeder and Dublin's own All City Records. As you would expect he has a very signature sound. Lots of blisfull airy tracks that are kinda just nice to listen to and hes been making waves in the scene for some time now. He's recently put out an ep for free download that he apparently used to give out at shows. Guess that makes me lucky as hes never been over to Dublin. Your in luck too, you can download it below.

He also contributed to the XLR8R podcast in June last year, still available for download now

Footwerk

Where to start. I suppose thinking about writing this post I had in mind that I was going to completly slate the raft of utter bollix coming out these days that most people seem to think is the best thing ever. Im talking about Footwerk. Of course, it isnt exactly a new thing with the music being around long before Dj Godfather launched Juke Traxx, an offshoot of Databass circa 2004 which was the first "major" label to distribute Juke Music exclusively. In fact, many say that the movement itself has been going since 1996. Waxmasters eponymous Footwork appeared on Dance Mania that year with the current poster boys of the scene Dj Spinn and Rashad releasing their debut 8 years later.

I was half expecting Mad Decent to lead the charge on this one much like they polluted many the ear with Baltimore Club Music 2 years ago and then quickly sent it packing as soon as something else they could flog came along. To me, the production values that went into a Baltimore club remix of Mr Postman are still annoyingly present in todays craze, just have a listen to any of the tracks on Planet Mu's
Bangs & Works Comp to get an idea of what I mean. No track over 3 minutes in length. All at 160-170 bpm and sounding like they were made without actually listening to what was going on. This seems to be the modus operandi with todays Footwork but, as I said, I thought I was just going to slate this movement but the actual fact of the matter is that we are really only seeing a snapshot of what all this is about. For me, the music would be first and foremost and in that respect the piss poor production quality is easy to laugh at but the fact of the matter is that 99% of these tracks are made for people to "battle" to. Something I cant really see Dubliners in the Twisted Pepper doing on a saturday night so why do Dublin Dj's play this stuff? I think most people this side of the pond have latched onto this because its "new" has lots of sub and some of the big guys are playing it. The reality of the matter is that something new will have come around by this time next year and my facebook page will be free of people posting youtube links to Footwork. Heres hoping anyway.

Bombaman

Im a huge fan of Bombaman. For someone who churns out about 6 new tracks every month the quality control is always high and the frequencies low. His latest offering is a 6 track ep on Nightshifters accompanied by 2 remixes, one from Nightshifters own Talk and the other by (cough cough) myself. You can pick up the ep and also check out the Akira inspired video for mmeelloo ssttaarr over on Nightshifters website.

Did I mention its free? No excuse, get it now

Jacques Greene

Its not everyday that a 20 year old producer gets to put out 2 highly anticipated and hyped
releases on 2 of the most forward thinking labels around but that's exactly what Montreal native Jacques Greene did last year when The Look came out on Lucky Me and the underground smash (Baby I Don't Know) What You Want surfaced on Night Slugs. Not to draw comparisons but I love it when an artist like this comes around, much in the same vein as when Joy Orbison first came to prominence, questioning what we already thought was acceptable in terms of combining styles. Anyway, hes recently done a mix ahead of his appearance at Bloc, you can get it over on the Hyponik Soundcloud. Id also reccomend checking out their full site, lots of interesting bits up there.

Free the Robots

Chris Alfaro, better known as Free the Robots has been releasing some really nice beats for a while now. Hes recently done a mix to promote his upcoming North Amercian tour and you can listen to it on his Soundcloud Page. He also contributed a track to a free compilation that Carhartt put together to promote the Run Vie festival that happened last year. This is prob my favourite track of his that Ive heard, heavy on the bass and low on the bpms.

The compilation in full featuring tracks from Dorian Concept, Aloe Blacc and more is available for free download here.

Addison Groove

2010 was the breakout year for Headhunter's Addison Groove project. I first heard it like a lot of people on his guest mix for Mary Ann Hobbs and since then we have seen the whole Chicago Juke house sound really take over again with producers like Ramadanman and Boddika and sets from Loefah really getting the juices flowing. The only commercially available tracks to come out of this project so far are Dumbshit and Footcrab and I personally cant wait for the rest of them to surface, In the meantime the good people at Swamp 81 have released a VIP version of Footcrab for free. You can get it
here. Previews of the new ep coming out on Swamp 81 are up on his soundcloud.

For anyone that missed the mix first time round you can get it here

∇known ShΔpes

New free ep from a new collective called unkown shapes. They are managed by Blue Daisy and have a sound not unlike the Rusties and Jokers of the world. The man himself says, Okay so I found a new musical outfit that i’ma be promoting and managing next year. This is called Unknown shapes, 2011 will be the beginning of their musical journey and i’ma put in the work as the unknown collective’s manager.

Very secretive altogether but the ep is very good, you can get it here

Far Nearer
